I had the wonderful opportunity to meet these two writers, and long time friends, to photograph profile photos and website images for their upcoming project on women in the workforce. With their blog coming out this year, they wanted to have specific images that illustrate the modern woman as she works in a busy world. I had a lot of fun with these professionals in their fields, discussing their work and writing.

Choosing the right photograph to represent yourself and your business on takes time and some research. If you work for yourself, and want to add a headshot to your About me page or profile section, you’ll have to know the dimensions that your website needs.
For social media, usually a landscape orientation shot works best so if you want to crop square, such as for Instagram or your Facebook profile page, it will easily chop the sides off without affecting your heads/body/hair. It also helps for the quirky Linked In profile photo – that odd circular slot that makes it difficult to find the right shot.

You’ve seen beautiful, happy, smiling photos of other families and their kids, and think “That will never be us!”. I’m here to tell you — it *will* be you *if* you follow a few simple steps that lead to success!
TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER Straight out of the gate, this is your first step, full stop. From the moment you arrive at the location, let your photographer take the lead. Let her guide you and the kids into natural poses. Let her grab the children’s attention. Let her follow the kids when they start to run. Those make great shots! Trust that she is a pro, and knows how to handle it. Let her make the children laugh, to get real, authentic emotions from them.
TIME IT RIGHT This starts from the night before the shoot. Have outfits laid out ready, no morning rush. Have kids sleep and wake up on time (no oversleeping!). Have a timely breakfast and lunch, with snacks, to keep the crankiness away. Keep everything normal, so they’re less likely to skip naps. And make sure your photoshoot is scheduled for when the kids are at their happiest – not hungry or tired
ABOUT THOSE SNACKS Be *very* careful when it comes to snacks and bribes. Do not start out immediately bribing your child with candy or promises of fun later. Let the photographer use her tricks and talent, and save the bribes for truly desperate moments. Your photographer will let you know when it’s time to pull out the big guns. And make sure those snacks don’t leave stains and crumbs – sugar free gummy bears and pretzels are better choices than cheesy crackers and ice cream.
KEEP CLOTHING AND PROPS SIMPLE You don’t need a lot of props to make a family photoshoot special and unique. In fact, less is definitely better and will look less dated as time goes by. Pick something special to your family, like an heirloom blanket, and ditch the moustaches-on-a-stick/theme-outfits/insert-trend-here for more authentic photos of you as you are. Coordinate your outfits into a colour family (think shades of blue and purple, or everyone in neutrals) instead of matching outfits for everyone.
BE OKAY WITH LESS THAN THEIR BEST BEHAVIOUR For many parents, the end goal of the session is the frame worthy shot of the family, and children, smiling happily into the camera while everyone hugs in bliss. It’s a gorgeous shot. But it’s not the only, or even the *best* shot, of your family. If the happy posed shot isn’t happening, just let it go. Embrace the beauty of the unposed shots. It’s far better to have happy shots of everyone running or walking together, than stress out the fam and get miserable shots of everyone staring glumly into the camera. This is about YOU too. Just have fun with it, and we’ll naturally get great shots!

Are you planning the ultimate surprise for your girlfriend or boyfriend – a proposal!? This is a HUGE moment and you want everything to be absolutely perfect. From the setting, to the set up, to capturing the exact moment for sharing with family and friends, it has to be planned perfectly. When hiring a photographer to photograph the big moment, here are some very important things to consider, how to plan, and questions to ask.
EXPERIENCE Has the photographer ever photographed a proposal before? Ask to see examples of their work, to be sure they’re capturing the moment the way you want/expect. Are they going to be able to know where exactly to stand, and have the right equipment? An experienced photographer can read the moment, and be ready to shoot when the time is right. Take the advice of your photographer on the best place to stand, so you get the best possible shots.
LOCATION Choosing the right location at the right time of day is key, because you want to be able to share photographs that are not only emotional (content) but beautiful (professionally framed and shot). Be sure your photographer knows *exactly* what each location you are considering looks like at different hours of the day.
Too much sunshine at noon? Then consider moving the location, or the time of day to later in the evening for better light. Too crowded in the evening? Maybe shoot earlier, and avoid the evening crowd. Make sure your photographer knows this location well, and it is an appropriate setting to pop the question, and that it makes sense for you to be there. A spot near restaurants makes sense, as a cover for why you’re there all dressed up. Ask your photographer for the best possible locations, without distractions, that will have good light at the time you want to propose.
SET UP If you choose a more quiet location such as a park, you can set up a little surprise before hand. I’ve had clients use signs, a picnic basket with champagne, a trail of of rose petals (careful of wind!), bouquets of flowers, and balloons to mark the spot.
Your photographer should be there before you, and can help make sure the spot doesn’t get spoiled by passersby or the wind. You want it perfect for when your intended sees it! Make sure to ask your photographer if they can help secure the location before hand, and be there early.
A RUSE You want the proposal to be a surprise, so you’ll need some help with the ruse! Enlist the help of your family and friends, to keep your soon-to-be-fiance in the dark.
She’ll want her hands looking Instagram ready, so have a sister or friend take her out for a manicure. Book a restaurant, so she’ll have a reason to dress up with make up. You could also say you booked a photographer for birthday/holiday/anniversay/V-Day photos, and this helps explain why there is a photographer waiting at the spot! Or your photographer can discretely hide, and then pop out when the moment arrives.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT PHOTO PACKAGE There are many different kinds of sessions that photographers offer. Make sure the session package you are choosing will get you enough photos to actually have a good sense of the event.
Most photographers offer full sessions (usually $750-$1200) with a lot of digital images, as well as print options. Some also offer mini sessions for under $400 – but watch the fine print to see how many photos you get. Some offer as little as 3 digital images for that price point.
