I hear from a lot of clients who don’t want to have their headshots taken, but they know that having a professional portrait is essential in today’s world where employers are routinely scouting out applicants on various social media outlets. You absolutely want to make sure that you’re leaving a positive impression. There are some myths floating around about getting your photos taken, and the root of those worries are usually false if you hire a professional.
MYTH ONE: My pictures will turn out awkward because I won’t know how to pose
One of the biggest reasons to select a professional photographer is the ability to pose you in a flattering way. A good pro will put you at ease because of their expertise while posing you. A professional will take charge of the shoot, leaving you confidant your photographer knows what they’re doing. It’s not on you, it’s on the photographer to get that great pose and angle.
Many people cite lack of confidence as their main reason for avoiding getting their headshots done.
Here is a truth: You do not have to be a natural model in front of the camera.
You do not have to worry you will look awkward
Hire a professional, and let them guide you.
MYTH TWO: The camera always makes me look bigger than I am/I need to lose weight before I have photos taken
This is a myth because you are most surely your own worst critic. However, *wide angle lenses as found on most cheap cameras and cell phones* do add distortion. Without getting too technical, lenses range from fish eye to telephoto, with a lot of millimetres in between. A professional will choose the right focal length lens and shooting angle to flatter your body type. Trust that your photographer has the right equipment to make you look your best!
MYTH THREE: The photo doesn’t really matter, it’s my resume that counts
I’m sure you have an amazing resume, and the ability to connect with your clients and fellow professionals in person. However, your profile portrait is the first impression you are giving to the world. You are the face of your own brand. Brand professionally.
Put as much effort into your online persona as you do your personal presence.
Your headshot is your digital introduction to the world,
as much as your smile and handshake is in person.
MYTH FOUR: The photographer can just fix up anything in Photoshop
While editing programs are very powerful, we’re really just moving pixels around and it can only do so much. The technical aspects of the shoot are in the hands of your photographer, but you’re going to have to come prepared. Your photographer can fix stray hairs, but cannot give you a whole new ‘do in Photoshop. We can remove blemishes, but we cannot completely redo your make up. A good photographer provides a natural looking headshot, without excess editing. And when necessary, make changes such as with the transition lenses below.
MYTH FIVE: I don’t have a nice suit, so I’ll have nothing to wear
If you work in a suit, you have a suit. If you don’t have a suit, and don’t work in a suit…why are you worried about having a suit for your portraits? Wear what defines you as a person, and as a business, and what reflects you and your style. Remember you are the ambassador for yourself and your work. Your headshot should tell that story about you and your work.
